The Martian, a science fiction movie based off a novel written by Andy Weir, came out into theaters October 1st, 2015. From the moment the movie starts the intensity begins. The entire film has a fine balance of anxiety, stress and comical relief.

Astronaut Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon, is stranded on Mars and thought to be dead by both his crew mates and everyone on earth. He has limited survival supplies and no contact with NASA or his crew mates. Watney has to figure out how to survive on Mars with his current supplies and contact NASA to tell them that he is alive and needs rescuing.

Once he is able to contact NASA, many problems arise while they try to rescue Watney. Time is NASA’s enemy as they try to save their friend from dying on a desolate planet.

The Martian shows the struggles Watney faces being alone on a planet with high odds of dying. His positive and comical spirit, botany skills, and brains keep him from giving up. Matt Damon does a wonderful job portraying the witty astronaut and showing all emotional sides of Mark Watney.

Rotten Tomatoes gives The Martian a 94% rating. The audience members and the top critics both agree that the Marian is a must see movie.

The PG-13 movie is rated appropriately due to its use of foul language and a very graphic scene in the beginning of the movie. The scene consists of Watney removing a piece of debris from his stomach and stapling the wound. This scene is very realistic and bloody.

Pitman junior Makayla Loomis stated, “I really enjoyed the movie which is unusual because I usually don’t enjoy space movies. Even though it was intense there were soft, funny moments making the Martian a movie I definitely recommend!”

The scenery from the movie of Mars was very realistic-looking and practical. The director’s interpretation was spot on. The rocky mountains and overall red-orange vibe added to the realism and imagination of the movie.

Overall the Martian is a thrilling movie that will take the audience from being stressed out to laughing hysterically. The Martian is a thrilling science fiction that captures the audience’s attention from start to finish. It is witty, intense and a great movie to watch this fall.
