The newly released sequel to the Maze Runner directed by Wes Ball is a success! Scorch Trials has already managed to top the box office with over $30 million in its opening week.

The Post-Apocalyptic film is based off of the second installment of James Dashner’s Maze Runner series. Viewers that enjoyed the first film will absolutely love the second.

The film starts off right where the Maze Runner left off with Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his fellow group of gladers (Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Sangster, and Ki Hong Lee) being rescued by a mysterious organization that claims to be a rival of WCKD (pronounced “wicked”) and has relocated the group along with others that have been rescued from mazes just like theirs to a remote outpost in the middle of the Scorch- a dry desert landscape that has overtaken the world.

Thomas who is already suspicious of his saviors soon learns that the organization is part of WCKD and discovers their true intentions of harnessing the maze runner’s immunity to the flare- a virus that has infected majority of the earth’s population. He quickly informs his other gladers and plots an escape out into the Scorch where the group faces a challenging journey in hopes of finding help against WCKD.

The Scorch Trials sheds light on aspects of the film series that the first one did not quite explain. Viewers do not only learn more about the character Thomas but the secrets and true intentions of others even those who are close to the group.

The actors did indeed deliver a strong performance throughout the film and even the special effects continue to surprise viewers with vivid images and the thrill of action. Over all the films plot was pretty straight forward and may have been predictable in some areas, but never failed to satisfy viewers.

The film will leave viewers on the edge of their seats asking “Why, just why?” It will certainly give the fans something to look forward to in the next film (The Death Cure). Scorch Trials has only made the film series better and it’s definitely a must see.
