It was a clever decision for Warner Brothers to include and focus the Joker in the majority of the trailers. But it was not fair to delude everyone into thinking he has a bigger role in the movie than he actually was. It sure seems like Warner Brothers has wasted Oscar winner, Jared Leto’s talent by butchering his performance in the editing room.

Jared Leto has made it clear that he is disappointed with the cuts that were made.

“Well of course I was upset that I made enough Joker footage to make a whole movie and they didn’t even show 10 percent of it. But I trust they know what they’re doing,” said Jared Leto when he was interviewed on the subject.

This is definitely understanding, considering the trouble and work Jared Leto put into preparing for this part.

The entire cast and crew of Suicide Squad claimed that Jared Leto never broke character during the entire time they were filming.

Leto’s cast member, Will Smith, who played the character Deadshot, had a lot to say about this topic.

“I’ve never actually met Jared Leto. We worked together for six months and we’ve never exchanged a word outside of ‘Action!’ and ‘Cut!’” Will Smith told Apple Beats 1 Radio station in October. “We’ve never said ‘Hello’ or ‘Good day.’ I’ve only ever spoken to him with me as Deadshot and him as The Joker. I literally have not met him yet. So, the first time I see him will be ‘Hey, Jared. What’s up?’ Not a single word exchanged off-camera. He was all in on the Joker.”

The Joker in Suicide Squad was obviously different from jokers in the past. Director, David Ayer talks about how he thought up this Joker character by studying old Batman Comics.

“I went back to the very first Joker comic. I think it was 1941 or something like that, which is also coincident with the first Batman comics. Batman the detective from the ’40s had Joker as this insane gangster. When you look at the ’40s and what was going on in the world, this concept of an insane gangster begins to make sense in regards to the time. So by then taking the insane gangster idea, the minimal seed, the core seed of Joker, bringing him into the modern world, what would an insane gangster look like today? That’s when you get the tattoos, the car, and the clothes, and the attitude,” said Ayer.

Jared Leto was brave to take this role knowing fans would critique it roughly. Leto feared the fans would not like the reinvention and new interpretation of the Joker. He was right, there has been a lot of controversy on this topic. All in all, Jared Leto executed this performance as best he could and his talent may have been shielded with all the cuts that were made.
